SLACK: Brought The Teamwork To The Next level

Description

Even wondered a digital workplace for formal connections? No worries, slack is there.

Slack, commonly known as Searchable Log of All Communication and Knowledge is introduced as a tool to manage office tasks where emails, files, messages, and many more can be exchanged. It supports all the new features introduced for a working environment from GitHub, Dropbox, Twitter to Google docs, MailChimp, Jira, Stripe, and Trello. It is mostly an application for messaging that includes voice and video calls also.

Started in February 2014 in San Francisco, it soon covered a great market in a very short span of time. By 2019, it reached over 12 million users worldwide and soon became a sensation. It was started by Stewart Butterfield who was commonly known as the founder of Flickr which was a photo-sharing application. Flicker also ruled the Internet soon after its launch. Slack also offers its free version where there are about 90% of the users using it for free.

Commence

Since teamwork is the root of all ideas. The same is the case for this. It all started when its founder and CEO Stewart Butterfield and his co-workers were working on a video game project which was named Glitch. They were using a messaging system for the project. However, the video game project was an unaccomplished one and they went under a huge loss of $15M but despite these, their efforts never got wasted. It made them understand the role of communication between the team for any project. Here comes an idea of organizing the team tasks and never leave a communication gap between the teammates, Slack came into reality.

At first, they were using Slack as their medium of communication and work as a team. It was already in the mind of Stewart Butterfield that this application will capture a great market for them as they find teamwork as the need of each and every workplace. He, along with his team members worked on this communication application and made some changes to make it more work-friendly.

They first gave access to 6 companies and gathered their feedback. According to the feedback, they made some more additional changes. Soon after this, they started sharing Slack with more companies and started working on the feedback provided. They kept on adding new features as per the feedbacks.

Market

The total revenue generated by Slack for 2019 was $390 million and it is expected to increase up to $4.22 billion by 2025. Most of its users are the companies having 10 to 50 employees and revenue of $1 million to $10 million. There are 85000 paid organization users who use Slack.

Reports said that 91% of businesses use at least two messaging applications and over 1.5 billion messages are sent through Slack every month. 65 of 100 fortune companies use Slack to avoid their communication hindrance among the team members.

Acquisition

Salesforce, which is among the leaders of tech giants, whose founder and CEO is Marc Benioff, acquired Slack for $26.79 and shares of 0.0776 for each Slack share. In total, it is representing a value of $27.7 billion. This acquisition resulted in one of the biggest technology deals of the year 2020. It is expected that this collaboration can give a tough competition to Microsoft.

It will reshape the upcoming enterprise communications and give a boost in that. It is said that together they will create an Operating System that will take part in turning things digital where one can work from anywhere. After all, Slack will still be led by Stewart Butterfield. It is also said that the new interface of the Salesforce 360 platform will be Slack.

Thus, the acquisition is expected to make a boom in the market. Let’s see the final result.
